We purchased our home in Brooklyn, NY in 2009. Our home is near the Atlantic Ocean, with scenic walks and community parks. Manhattan is only 45 minutes away and Coney Island, with an aquarium, amusements, beaches, and boardwalks, a mere two trains stop away. We have a melting pot of cultures in our neighborhood, which are reflected in the variety of restaurants within walking distance. There is a good selection of both public and private schools, a short distance away, with many opportunities for young students. Our home can be described as a comfortable and cozy corner apartment on the 5th floor of a private building. The residents of our building are very close and there is a good mix of both younger and older individuals. Many of the young couples are just starting families themselves, and the children of the building are growing up and socializing together. The building frequently holds community events in the common areas and activities are always planned for the children.
Our dog Hiro
On our first wedding anniversary, we decided to fulfill one of our life wishes: to adopt a dog. We spent hours researching different breeds looking for a dog that would be comfortable in the size of our home, our lifestyle, and that would be good with children. When we arrived at the no-kill shelter, Hiro was the first dog we saw, and we fell in love. We looked at all the other dogs that also fit our criteria, but Hiro was the one we connected with and took home.
Hiro is a Chihuahua mix but unlike other small dogs of his type, he is a quiet, affectionate little dog who loves cuddles, food, and walks. When our friends initially brought their children to our house, we found that he was at ease with them, and was very patient with them. For example, when one of our friend’s 2-year-old girl was visiting us, she grabbed Hiro’s ear and just held it. All Hiro did was stay still and look at us, as if to say, “a little help here?” After the firm grip of his ear was removed, he gently laid his head next to her and cuddled.
