Greetings from New Jersey!
Hola! We are Ted and Dan from Maplewood, a cute little town near New York City. Thank you for your interest in our family and for taking the time to learn about us. We have so much respect and admiration for you as you think about an adoption plan for your child. We hope to answer any questions you may have about us.
We are an active, warm, and fun-loving family. Our days are filled with the smells of home-cooked food, music, two snuggly dogs, and a fair amount of being goofballs. We are loving the gift of helping our best friends raise their child, who was adopted, and we are eager to welcome our own child into our family life.
We hope these next few pages let you get to know us a bit. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. We have worked very hard and been fortunate to create a life of abundance. It is our wish to share this warmth with a child of our own.
Thank you for considering us!
We met in 2002 while living in New York City and immediately became close friends. But we knew our connection was marriage-material and started dating just a few months later. We had to live apart for two tough years when Ted had to relocate to Florida for work. Dan eventually moved down too and Florida was home for ten years. This allowed us to become very close with Dan’s family, who live in Miami. And now our families have gelled into one big one.
We are warm and caring people, who are very different from one another in some fun and complementary ways. While we’re both goal-oriented planner types, Ted brings that fun extrovert energy and spontaneity that balances nicely with Dan’s calm and thoughtful demeanor. Together we make a strong team, which has served us well in life’s ups and downs.
In 2018, our best friends Brian and Shawn asked us to co-parent, as they were just starting their own journey to become adoptive parents. We were so honored and excited! This decision and Dan’s work brought us back to the New York City area. After the arrival of baby Miles in June 2019, we moved to our forever home here in Maplewood, NJ, so we could have the ideal set-up for us to raise Miles together with Brian and Shawn and to adopt our own child too. The move to New Jersey has given us plenty of room to grow into, a big yard, access to great schools, and a community with tons of activities for families. We adore this little town.
We are excited to grow our family, to share our joys and our dreams with a child. And to support them in finding their own joys and dreams!
We are potential adoptive parents Ted and Dan from New Jersey. We are currently looking to adopt a child. We may be reached through our adoption agency, Friends in Adoption and will gladly answer any questions that you may have for us. We are hopeful, eager, and legally approved to adopt a baby anywhere in the United States, and we hope to hear from you! 🙂

“Ted is a wonderful, caring, and compassionate soul. He is the life force of our family and everyone’s go-to guy when in need of a thoughtful word, encouraging nudge, or a sounding board to bounce ideas off. It is no surprise that two of our closest friends have named their sons after Ted. He is always there to lend a hand and offer wise advice and council to anyone who seeks it. His generosity of spirit is known to all who have been lucky enough to cross his path. But his love is not limited to those he knows. Ted is a true believer in social justice and giving back — including to animals and the natural world.
Ted is very hard-working and has held important positions improving the lives of people in his community by running operations for city governments and hospitals. He now devotes himself to real estate investment, managing operations for multifamily communities. When not at work, Ted focuses on exercise and yoga, but is also first in line to eat cookies and ice cream after dinner. He has a passion for Sci-Fi movies and shows, enjoys reading fiction, and when its warm out he can be found working in the yard, feeding wild birds, and tending to his many flowerpots.
Ted grew up in Georgia and South Carolina. He’s very close to his siblings and has grown very close to my family as well. Ted is a loving and devoted friend. He takes tremendous pride in having our home serve as the main gathering place for our friends to celebrate life through dinners, boardgames, and sharing stories or a good laugh.
Ted is very aware of how lucky we are and never misses an opportunity to express his gratitude and appreciation. He is eager to share his boundless love and passion for life with a child.”

“Have you ever met someone who makes people feel calmer without saying or doing anything? Dan is one of those special people. He is quiet, kind, and a natural caregiver. He has the best moral compass of anyone I have ever met. Where most people try to do good, Dan just is good.
I know part of this comes from his amazing family. His parents are political refugees who lost everything when they had to flee Cuba. They came to the US and built a life for themselves, and later for their children, from hard work and perseverance. They passed this strength on to him.
Dan is also brilliant. Everyone in our circles of friends and family all say that Dan is the smartest person they know. He worked hard and earned scholarships to amazing schools. He has two PhDs and never stops learning. In his free time he studies world history and social theory, loves watching documentaries, follows and plays sports, and loves to cook. And, wow, can he cook.
For such a smart guy he sure loves being silly. He loves to laugh and has the best laughter that we all adore. His funny voices and silly songs always come out unconsciously when he is with kids and dogs.
Speaking of dogs, Dan is a lover of animals and so good with them. He dotes on our two old dogs and did not hesitate for a second when we had to rearrange our lives to care for a special needs dog. I love his instinct to rescue and rehome stray dogs.
Dan, at his core, is a teacher. Before moving into the private sector he was an academic, teaching at university and traveling the world to research how diseases and people move across the planet. His love of learning and teaching makes him so much fun. And he is the guy everyone asks when they want to know something, like how to cook a complex recipe, how to train a dog, help with math homework, some random sports trivia… he is a useful guy to know!
I love watching his joy at patiently teaching Miles and the many other children in our lives. When other people cannot get their kids to sit still for a second, Dan somehow has them intently listening to him. I am so excited to watch him share all his gifts with our child.”
We are grateful that our home is the place where our families and friends gather to share in the experiences of life. We have worked to create a home where all feel welcome and are invited to share in the bounty of our table or sit by the warmth of our fireplace. We are blessed to have a home built on love, respect, and laughter. We believe strongly in these values and in passing them on to the next generation.
On a typical day we can be found at home cooking up a storm, playing cards and boardgames, hanging in the yard, cuddling our dogs Cole and Monty, or settling in to watch some TV. We have family only six minutes away, so Liz and her boys, Sam, four years old, and Oliver, seven years old, are often here hanging out too.
We go big for holidays and birthday celebrations! Hosting family and friends, putting up decorations, and making big meals are some of our favorite things. So we have fun making a big deal out of special days.
Thanks to Miles we have come to learn the many nearby activities for kids. So we do a lot of fun stuff with him like indoor swim lessons, gymnastics class, music class, and walking to town to wave at the trains as they go by.
Our home life includes a true love for travel, with a passion to see the world and its cultures. We frequently visit different national parks and forests. And we have explored countries in Asia, Europe, and Latin America and look forward to continuing our journeys once the pandemic subsides. Seeing the wonders and diversity of life is a gift we want to share with our child. Also, we still have a home in Florida that we visit often so we have time with Dan’s family there.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” –ancient tribal proverb
Family is very important to us and we make a point to stay connected with our parents and siblings. Our families have melded together at this point and everyone is excited about our adoption journey. They look forward to participating in the joys and challenges of adding a baby to our house.
Ted’s family is originally from Savannah, Georgia. His mom passed from cancer, and he remains close with his dad. He is very tight with both his brother and sister, and he adores his sister’s son who is growing into an amazing young man. Ted’s brother and awesome fiancé will marry later this year and are excited for us to have kids around the same age.
Dan also comes from a close-knit family. His parents emigrated from Cuba and settled in Miami in the early 1960’s. He is the oldest of two, his brother married his high school sweetheart, and they have two wonderful, athletic boys. Dan was raised speaking Spanish at home and remains a fluent speaker, a tradition we intend to pass on. Dan’s sweet natured parents recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
In 2018, our best friends Shawn and Brian had decided to become parents by adopting a child and invited us to coparent with them. Like us, they take parenting very seriously, and thought their child would benefit from the additional love and support. Dan and I were honored and thrilled by this! They eventually paired with an amazing birthmom and baby Miles came into our lives. He has been with us since his birth, and it is hard to believe that was almost three years ago now. We were all living together in Brooklyn, but moved out here for a big house and yard and a town ideal to raise children in.
So our family today is us, Shawn and Brian, and 3 year old Miles — who keeps us all laughing and on our toes. Miles is amazing. He is a ball of energy with a magical imagination. He loves anything with wheels and to make people laugh. He is already asking for a little brother or sister. Dan’s mom put it well: “The child we adopt will have the benefits of a sibling and a big family, while also being as cherished as a first-born child.”
We feel fortunate to live in a hidden gem of a town named Maplewood, NJ. It is only 30 minutes from the bustle of New York City, but it is a quiet, little town with green parks, a huge nature preserve, and an adorable, tiny downtown with shops and delicious restaurants. The town is centered around family life, so there is always something fun to do. On weekends they close the main street to cars, and families hang out downtown listening to live music and eating outdoors while kids run around. We often walk to downtown to do that, or to the nature preserve two blocks from us to go on a hike.
We love history, so we renovated a charming, historic house. It has seven bedrooms and six bathrooms, but it still feels cozy and warm. We love that we have lots of room for family visits and for designated play areas. During the pandemic it has been wonderful to have room to spread out. We have a large yard we play in and plant a garden in the Spring with tomatoes and herbs.
Maplewood is so diverse and welcoming that we joke that it feels like a movie set. This is the first place we have lived where neighbors actually know and help each other. Our neighborhood is filled with kids, which makes the holidays and block parties lots of fun. Our backyard neighbor, Frank, is the mayor and his family have been wonderful through the pandemic.
Our church community is a big part of our life. We are members of a welcoming, diverse Unitarian Universalist congregation that offers wonderful opportunities to learn and serve the community. We are grateful for their youth program and all it offers its kids.
Being only 30 minutes outside of NYC also allows us to pop in to see old friends and for some big city culture. We like visiting the Natural History Museum, catching a Broadway show, and relaxing with our friends and their kids in Central Park.
